Roger Pines is an internationally recognized opera professional. He has more than three decades of experience in the field, including positions with four important companies (Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Diego Opera, Glimmerglass Opera, and The Dallas Opera).

Roger has amassed a wide variety of experiences as a writer for distinguished opera-related publications; as an opera broadcast host and co-producer; as a lecturer on all manner of operatic topics; as a repertoire consultant for singers, whether renowned or aspiring; and as a presenter of  seminars on historically important singing.

To all of his work Roger brings a passion for opera that is lifelong.  Whatever the project, he approaches it with unique enthusiasm and with a desire to propagate the joys of opera to the widest possible audience.

About Roger

Roger Pines recently completed his 26-year tenure at Lyric Opera of Chicago. Among the many roles he filled at Lyric were dramaturg, program editor, co-host / co-producer for the company’s live opening-night broadcasts, and special lecturer/consultant for the Ryan Opera Center, Lyric’s young-artist program.

Roger has judged for numerous prestigious vocal competitions nationwide, including the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions (since 1991) and the national competitions of both Classical Singer Magazine and the National Association of Teachers of Singing. A regular contributor of many articles and reviews for important American and European publications, as well as for programs of every major North American opera company, Roger has also written program notes for CDs on seven major labels.

A frequent lecturer, Roger recently gave a series of presentations on historically important singing for both Chicago’s renowned Newberry Library and the Opera Department of the University of Texas at Austin. He has appeared annually as a panelist on the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts’ “Opera Quiz” since the 2006.

Roger’s career has spanned the United States, where he has served several of the country’s top opera companies in various capacities. Likewise, his writing projects have been extensive, with published works appearing in prestigious programs, music periodicals, and recordings internationally.
